How regular soy milk is made

Traditional soy milk is made by soaking soybeans, grinding them, cooking the mixture and then filtering out the pulp (okara). What's left is soy milk. It tastes light, but some of the soybean, such as most of its dietary fibre, is removed with the pulp.

Whole soy milk keeps the whole bean

Whole soy milk usually means soy milk made without filtering out the pulp. The beans are ground very finely so the entire soybean stays in the drink. As a result, whole soy milk is:

  • Richer: thicker, with a more pronounced soy flavour.
  • Closer to the whole bean: including the fibre that regular soy milk filters out.
  • Still smooth: fine grinding means no grittiness.

3 things to check when choosing

  1. Ingredients: the simpler the better. Look out for extra additives.
  2. Nutrition label: protein per serving, and whether the sugar content suits you.
  3. Origin and storage: where the beans come from, and refrigerate after opening as directed.

How to enjoy whole soy milk

With its rich flavour and body, whole soy milk is great on its own and especially good in drinks: add coffee for a soy latte, matcha for matcha soy, or black tea for soy milk tea. Its taste won't get lost. For more ideas, see what to add to unsweetened soy milk.

FAQ

How is whole soy milk different from regular soy milk?

Regular soy milk is filtered to remove the okara (soybean pulp). Whole soy milk grinds the entire soybean very finely and keeps the pulp, so it is creamier and keeps more of the soybean, such as dietary fibre.

Is whole soy milk gritty?

No. The beans are ground very finely, so it drinks smoothly. It just tastes richer than regular soy milk.

How do I choose a whole soy milk?

Check the ingredients list (the simpler the better), the protein per serving on the nutrition label, and the origin and storage instructions on the pack.
