What to Add to Unsweetened Soy Milk: 8 Everyday Ideas
Bored of plain soy milk? Eight easy ideas using things you already have: coffee, matcha, black tea, brown sugar, cocoa, banana, black sesame and oats, plus breakfast pairings.

Unsweetened soy milk is light and versatile, but even favourites need a change. These eight ideas use everyday ingredients and take about two minutes.
1. Coffee: soy latte
30ml of espresso with 180ml of soy milk gives the best balance. For full ratios and how to avoid curdling, see how to make a soy latte.
2. Matcha: matcha soy
Whisk 2–3g of matcha with hot water, then pour it into 200ml of soy milk. See matcha soy ratio and tips.
3. Black tea: soy milk tea
Strong black tea and soy milk at 1:1 is the tea-shop classic. See the perfect soy milk tea ratio.
4. Brown sugar soy
Drizzle the syrup down the inside of the glass before adding cold soy milk for tiger stripes.
5. Cocoa soy
Mix the cocoa into a paste with a little hot water first, then add soy milk so it doesn't clump.
6. Banana soy smoothie
Blend for 30 seconds. The banana is sweet enough on its own.
7. Black sesame soy
Good hot or cold, with a rich, nutty aroma that's lovely on winter mornings.

8. Soy overnight oats
Soak the oats in soy milk overnight in the fridge, then top with fruit in the morning.

Breakfast pairings
- Taiwanese style: rice balls, egg crepes or turnip cake with hot soy milk.
- Western style: toast, bagels or scrambled eggs with an iced soy latte.
- Quick: soy overnight oats made the night before.

FAQ
What can I add to unsweetened soy milk?
The easiest additions are coffee, matcha or black tea. For something sweeter, add a little brown sugar, honey or banana. For a more filling drink, add oats or black sesame.
Can I blend soy milk with fruit?
Yes. Banana, apple and mango all blend well with soy milk. Very sour fruits such as pineapple or kiwi may make soy milk curdle, so use them sparingly.
What goes well with soy milk at breakfast?
Soy milk goes with toast, rice balls, egg crepes and oats. You can also use it as the base for porridge or overnight oats.
