Soy Milk Black Tea: The Perfect Ratio for a Tea-Shop Taste at Home
Soy milk black tea works best at 1:1, or 6:4 for a stronger tea taste. How to brew strong tea, which leaves to use, and hot and iced soy milk tea.

The perfect soy milk tea ratio
Classic 1:1
Equal parts tea and soy, the closest to what tea shops serve.
Adjust to taste

Start with strong tea
The secret to good soy milk tea is strong tea. If the tea is weak, all you taste is soy milk.
- Leaves: 8–10g of black tea per 300ml of hot water, or 2 tea bags per 200ml.
- Water: just off the boil (about 95°C).
- Time: 5–6 minutes, 1–2 minutes longer than usual.
- Cooling: for iced drinks, pour the tea straight over plenty of ice to keep the aroma.
Iced soy milk tea
- Brew strong tea and stir in sugar to taste while it's hot.
- Pour it into a shaker or large glass full of ice to cool.
- Add the same amount of cold soy milk and shake or stir well.
Hot soy milk tea
- Heat soy milk to about 60–65°C without boiling.
- Pour it into the strong tea and stir.
Which tea leaves work best
- Assam: rich and malty, the classic choice.
- Ceylon: bright and a little lighter.
- Oolong or Tieguanyin: a roasted oolong makes another popular drink, soy oolong.

FAQ
What is the best soy milk tea ratio?
The classic is 1:1 black tea to soy milk, for example 150ml of each. Use 6:4 for a stronger tea taste or 4:6 if you want more soy flavour.
Is soy milk tea the same as tonyu tea?
Yes. Tonyu is the Japanese word for soy milk, so tonyu black tea is simply soy milk black tea.
Which tea should I use?
Use a strong black tea with malty notes, such as Assam or Ceylon. Brew it stronger than usual so the soy milk doesn't mask it.
Is soy milk tea high in calories?
It depends mainly on the soy milk you use and how much sugar you add. To keep it lighter, add less sugar and check the nutrition label on your soy milk.
